When I first got to university, I knew that I wanted to get the most out of the experience as possible. I was fortunate enough to be an officer for the Robotics Club during its reincarnation (the original club had previously disbanded years before). I was able to work with many talented young leaders to make it the largest STEM club in the school. I worked as an officer in the club for several years and still try to maintain a relationship with the members.
Our goal for the club is to expose student engineers to the practical skills needed to perform real work. Classroom experience is great and undoubtedly a necessary component in learning, but what I found was there were many senior level engineering students who had never even soldered before. This is why we have hands on tutorials for many of these basic skills like soldering, microcontrollers, 3D design, and more. Another goal was to get students from different majors working together to make projects. Designing one module in a larger design is easy, getting everything to work together is the hardest part - and a necessary skill.
Finally, we wanted community outreach to be a major focus of the club. It is important that kids are exposed to technical skills early to ensure a healthy crop of new engineers, programmers, and forward-thinking young entrepreneurs!
